Threshold & Grace, Farasan Islands
The gateway of Beit Al-Rifai rises from coral stone and accumulated memory. Built in 1922 by pearl merchant Ahmad Al-Rifai on the Farasan Islands of Jazan, its stucco ornament carries the quiet evidence of a life spent in motion; arabesque, calligraphy, and ogee tracery resolving into a surface of layered intention. A merchant’s travels made permanent in stone.
Lifted from its coastal context, the structure reveals itself slowly. The stained-glass lanterns glow against an otherwise monochrome field; not ornament for its own sake, but colour carried home from distant ports, pressed into the architecture of return.
Beneath the arch, an Arabian horse stands at rest. Unhurried. At ease within the geometry that holds it. Where Cairo’s gazelle moved lightly against mass and permanence, the horse here brings its own gravity, rooted, enduring, as native to this land as the coral it stands upon.
A structure known to few beyond its island. Drawn here not to document it, but to restore it to sight.
